Albanian Riviera

The Albanian Riviera stretches along the Ionian coast south of Vlorë down to Sarandë, backed by the Ceraunian Mountains that plunge dramatically toward turquoise water. It's often compared to Greece's islands or the Amalfi Coast, but rougher around the edges and considerably cheaper, though prices are climbing fast as word spreads.

Dhërmi and Jalë have the most developed beach clubs and nightlife, drawing a younger, increasingly international crowd in July and August. Himarë feels a bit more low-key, while Ksamil, near Sarandë at the southern end, has the postcard-perfect white sand and clear water that gets the most Instagram attention—and the worst crowding in peak season.

The coastal road (SH8) linking these towns is narrow, winding, and slow going, with switchbacks cut into cliffsides; renting a car gives freedom but demands patience. Llogara Pass, just north of Dhërmi, offers a dramatic mountain crossing with views down to the sea.

Facilities are still catching up to demand—expect construction, inconsistent infrastructure, and a mix of polished new resorts next to unfinished concrete buildings. Visiting in June or September avoids the worst heat and crowds while keeping warm, swimmable water.
