Afragola is a densely built town just north of Naples, so fused with neighboring Cardito, Casalnuovo di Napoli, and Casoria that it feels less like a distinct destination than part of the continuous Neapolitan plain. Few travelers come here for leisurely sightseeing, and it's worth being realistic about that before planning a visit.

That said, it has genuine depth beneath the surface, literally: railway excavations uncovered an Early Bronze Age settlement, huts and all, buried under volcanic ash from a prehistoric Vesuvius eruption. The town's own documented history stretches back to at least 1258, when it appears as a rural casale, though a local legend claims a 12th-century founding by Roger II.

The historic core centers on churches rather than grand monuments: Santa Maria d'Ajello, with its majolica-topped bell tower, dates to the 1100s, and the Sant'Antonio complex grew from a 17th-century Franciscan foundation. A so-called castello survives only as fragments of a medieval fortification, now repurposed for community use.

The real draw for most visitors is Napoli Afragola station, Zaha Hadid's dramatic high-speed rail hub, opened in 2017. Its swooping, futuristic design makes it a striking counterpoint to the modest town around it, and it's arguably the main reason outsiders pass through at all.
