This stretch southwest of Rome, running toward the coast, isn't a single destination so much as three distinct layers worth understanding separately. Acilia is unglamorous outer-Rome suburbia, built up unevenly over former agricultural land, with little reason to linger unless you're passing through on the Roma–Lido train line.

Ostia Antica is the real draw: a remarkably well-preserved Roman port city, often overlooked in favor of Pompeii despite requiring none of the travel. Its ancient theatre, enlarged to hold roughly 4,000 spectators, and the mosaic-paved Piazzale delle Corporazioni, once lined with offices tied to grain shipping, give a vivid sense of a working Roman town rather than just a monumental one. Facing the excavations, a small medieval borgo grew up around a ninth-century fortification and the sanctuary of Saint Aurea—worth a wander after the ruins.

Castel Fusano adds a green, coastal counterpoint: a protected pinewood within the Roman Coast nature reserve, planted with umbrella pines over older Mediterranean scrub, laced with trails and the remains of a villa traditionally linked to Pliny. A 2017 fire scarred parts of the woodland, so expect some patchiness rather than uniform shade.

Together, reachable by the same light-rail corridor, these places suit a day trip combining archaeology, a walk in nature, and a glimpse of everyday Roman suburb life—not a beach resort or postcard town.
